License Issues when Networking ZIPGym
License Agreement:
The ZIPGym license agreement allows the owner to use ZIPGym on as many computers as the purchaser owns for their business. However, networking with ZIPGym requires the use of FileMaker Pro software, and FileMaker Pro License terms require that you have a separate copy (license) of FileMaker Pro on each computer using ZIPGym on the network.
In simple English, if you plan on networking multiple computers together to use ZIPGym you will need to purchase a unique copy of FileMaker Pro for each computer.
Converting your current ZIPGym data to be used on a network
Are your files ready for Networking?:
The first version you used of ZIPGym did not need to use FileMaker Pro to work (you may have been using a "Runtime" version). Now that you want to use a network you need to be sure that your files work with FileMaker Pro. If you are currently using FileMaker Pro with ZIPGym you can skip to the next section, if not read on.
If you are not currently using FileMaker Pro to run ZIPGym (you have never seen the words "FileMaker Pro" on the bottom taskbar) you will need to convert your current data into a different format that will work on your network.
The original ZIPGym CD you received has the files you need on it. Locate your ZIPGym CD and call me at 719-260-1893 to get assistance converting your current data into the Network Format you need.
Tips on Setting up your network
Getting Started:
In the world of networking you have two choices: using a “Server” or going “Peer to Peer”. Each method has its own advantages.
Server Method:
A Server is a type of computer you buy. I would suggest the Dell PowerEdge SC. Dell's toll-free number is 888-647-3355. A server computer is designed to handle automatic backups and various other important tasks that other computers are not originally set up to perform. Purchasing a server computer does not cost much more than a regular computer. However, you typically do not receive a monitor with your server purchase.
Peer to Peer Method:
A peer to peer network is sufficient for small networks (2 to 3 computers). Be sure to determine which computer on this type of network is the fastest and load the ZIPGym software onto the fastest one. Connect the other computers to the fast one via a switch and eithernet cable (described below). The peer to peer method is the slower of the two networking methods.
For Both Methods:
Either method you choose to use for your network you will need to purchase a Switch and a good amount of Eithernet Cabling to connect your computers together. Get your measurements ready. There are a number of good switches on the market so you can ask any computer store tech to find one in your budget. Either method you choose for your network you will need one computer to hold the ZIPGym software (we'll call it the server computer) and the other computers will connect to that server using the switch.
Consult an Expert:
Networks can be unpredictable. Networks require maintenance the same as any important tool you use. I strongly suggest you hire a professional company or individual to set up your network for you. These professionals will play a vital role when it comes to maintaining your network system.
Software Requirements
Software to Purchase:
ZIPGym can only be networked with the use of another software program called FileMaker Pro. FileMaker Pro is the software system that allows ZIPGym to be networked on multiple computers. You must purchase a FileMaker Pro CD for EACH computer you want to network. (This is according to the license agreement for FileMaker Pro—the network will not work without unique FileMaker Pro serial numbers on each networked computer.)
You must purchase FileMaker Pro 6 for each computer you want to network. You can purchase full versions or "upgrade" versions via www.filemaker.com or at a major computer store such as CompUSA.
Money Saving Tip:
If you have or can get an older version of FileMaker Pro, you can load the "older" version first then purchase and load FileMaker Pro "upgrades" to save you lots of money. The same "old" version can be loaded on each computer, then "upgrade" each one of them with unique upgrade purchases of FileMaker Pro.

Each of your computers must have a separate FileMaker Pro license. ZIPGym should ONLY be loaded on your Server computer.
The Final Step for your network setup
Making the network work with ZIPGym:
The last step in setting up your ZIPGym network is to create "Shortcuts" to the ZIPGym program on each of your workstations.
Mount or Show the "Server" computer on one of your workstations (a computer on the network that is not the Server). When you can see the hard drive for the Server on the desktop of a workstation, find the ZIPGym file (inside the ZIPGym folder) and make a shortcut of it on your workstation's desktop.
How to make a shortcut: Right-Click on the ZIPGym file and while holding down the "Right-side" of the mouse, DRAG the mouse to your desktop (on the workstation), then Let Go and choose from the pop up menu "Create Shortcuts Here". You can unmount the server from the desktop of the workstation if you like. In the future you will use this Shortcut on your Workstation to start ZIPGym. You do not need to "mount" the server to run ZIPGym on the workstation as long as the shortcut is available.
Repeat the process of making shortcuts on all your networked workstations. Be sure that the Server is on and ZIPGym is running, then you can start and stop using ZIPGym at any time on any workstation using the Shortcuts you just made — just Double-Click on the shortcut to start ZIPGym on any or all of the Workstations.
Final Summary for Networking ZIPGym
FileMaker Pro License:
Each of your Networked computers must have a separate FileMaker Pro license to work with ZIPGym on a network.
ZIPGym program on one (1) Computer only:
The ZIPGym program & data files should ONLY be loaded on your "Server" computer to work.
"Shortcuts" on the other computers:
The other computers on your network (workstations) will contain "Shortcuts" that link to the ZIPGym software that lives on the Server computer.
